The most common cause of death from a heart attack is due to ventricular fibrillation.

Ventricular fibrillation can be treated early by performing compressions and applying an electrical shock to the heart with an AED.

CPR buys time until EMS arrives.

By performing CPR, you are keeping oxygenated blood flowing from the heart to the brain.

Because most cardiac arrests occur at home or work, families and colleagues can save friends and family members by starting CPR. Brain death occurs in less than 10 minutes if CPR is not done.

1) If you suspect a heart attack, call EMS (911)

2) If the victim is unresponsive and not breathing normally (gasping ) then START CPR, starting with compressions.

3) Continue CPR until EMS arrives to take over life support

Early access (9-1-1), early CPR and early defibrillation are the keys to the “chain of survival.”
